Chapter 6

Assessment of the child walking

Ability to walk

The ability to walk with or without help is recorded. The inability to walk without support indicates the presence of major neurological dysfunction or other serious pathology. The presence of minor neurological dysfunction (MND) does not interfere with the ability to walk without support.

Posture during walking (PT)

Procedure

The child walks up and down the assessment room (or corridor) a few times. To avoid increased self-awareness of walking behaviour, which may induce an unnatural way of walking, the child may be given the task of going to fetch an object from the other side of the room.

Age

Walking can be evaluated from early childhood onwards.

Recording

The following aspects of walking behaviour are assessed:

posture during walking;

gait width;

heel–toe gait; and

quality of gait.
